As Tamsui district is located at the mouth of Tamsui River, the village or town had been formed in here for a long time. In Chinese, we could translate "Tamsui" to fresh water. In several hundred years ago, Tamsui was occupied by Spanish and Dutch. They relied on the fresh water from Tamsui River to support their continuous journey. Besides that, the Tamsui Habour was a good shelter for the fleets of Spanish and Dutch to take a break. However, due to the problem of heavy sediment, and the size of ship became larger and larger, the importance of Tamsui was became lower in the early of 20th Century. Its position was replaced by Keelung Habour.
