For whatever reason (a recent cold snap? the rain earlier?) the fish were not in a killing mood today. Indeed, the word at the flyshops was that even the famed Elk River had been fishing very poorly in recent days (i.e. 2 fish for some boats). We did have a lot of "hits and misses" by smaller sized cutties, with a few larger types along the way, but the fish did not seem to be really trying to devour the flies. Note: a big old salmonfly "Sponge Bob Squarepants" type of fly worked as well as anything. Apparently this stream has a good hatch of stoneflies (salmonflies?).
