Niamh and Martin's Work since 2002.

Niamh and Martin are a married couple from Ireland who got involved in Missionary work in 2002 through the Sons of Divine Providence when they sold their house in Dublin and decided to dedicate a year of their lives to working with the poor in Kenya. Just before their trip, they discovered that Niamh was unexpectantly pregnant so their trip was shortened to 5 months, when they returned to have their daughter Tegan. While in Kenya they had a mix of experiences, from the frightening to the delightful, but on the whole, the trip having been disappointing from the point of view of the connections over there being less than organised for the work that they wanted to do. None-the-less, they managed to organise some school retreats and concentrated on meeting with the youths in the outstations to discuss the real issues for them.

Again in 2005, they returned to the same congregation, but a different parish and found the experience to be extremely fulfilling. The Father-in-charge there, Fr. Marek Krakus and the other priest, Fr. Malcolm Dyer put an awful lot into planning a schedule of work for Martin and Niamh. The Fathers took into account the strengths of Martin and Niamh and organised for them to give seminars to the small Christain Communities, known as Mwakis (which is taken from the Kikuyu word for Fireside). During their seven week trip they managed to give 16 seminars and met up with every small Christain Community within the parish of Kaburugi. Niamh is a secondary school teacher of Religious Education and taught the communities the method of Lectio Divina, discovering that Bible Study was the main area of weakness within the Mwakis. Martin is a recovering alcoholic and is in his 21st year of sobriety and he shared his life journey of how he returned to his faith. Other work they did involved some meetings with the youth in school and giving the preaching at mass. Their main aim was to prepare a 30 minute video of the project which will hopefully bring in very much needed funding.

This year 2009, Martin and Niamh returned to oversee the developments and they were thrilled with the progress. The bus is bringing many more children to the centre and the building work is well underway. They had a lovely visit with Fr. Malcolm Dyer who is now in charge and Fr. Raphael.
