Buscemi

A typical Sicilian hilltown, Buscemi has become a living museum of the agricultural traditions of 19th century Sicily. It is located about 30 miles west of Syracuse. It has preserved an overseer's house, a laborer's house, an olive press and a wine press. The latter two items were in regular use until the 1950s. Buscemi also occupies a lovely hilltop view of the surrounding countryside, as do most small interior Sicilian towns where a hilltop location was essential for centuries as a defense against both armies and brigands.
