Mackinac Island & Fort Michilimackinac 45

Longfellow wrote it was a birch bark canoe Hiawatha used when hunting Nahma, the "king of fishes" with his cedar fishing line or as he paddled the shores of Lake Gitchi Gumme. Birch bark is a versatile material. It was used for boats, shelters and for making things like baskets. It's also a handsome bark.
