Kayak on the Au Sable River

The Au Sable River runs from the central highlands of northern Michigan near Grayling to Oscoda on Lake Huron. It's a great fly fishing river and the site of the annual 24 hour Au Sable Canoe Race. The stretch that we like to kayak includes the Mason Wilderness, a stretch of the river where there are no houses or cottages and fishing requires barbless hooks and the catch and release of all fish caught. There are rainbow, brook and brown trout in the river.

It's a great river to kayak. The current provides most of the work to get downstream. Wildlife on the river include mink, a variety of ducks, heron, muskrat, deer, bobcat, osprey, beaver, and eagles.
