the Chester Canal basin,
photographed from the walls of Chester, is part of the system (of
canals) which links Cheshire with the, important since Roman times,
town of Nantwich which was opened in 1779. Salt from Nantwich was
used during Roman times by the garrison at Chester (Deva Victrix) as
a preservative, and as a condiment, and is today used in the production
of Cheshire cheese and in the tanning industries based in the Cheshire Plain.
