In the Army they are called Fort's. Also, called "Post," as in, "I reside on Post." Air Force & Naval installations are bases.

I was born in Beach Army Hospital 4/26/1965. I never knew the base closed. I never saw pictures. I was so surprised to see the base and hospital closed. Thank you for the pictures.

In the late 1960s, both my parents worked at Fort Wolters and commuted every day from Fort Worth. My dad, Trigg Morgan, was head of civilian personnel and my mother, Ruth, worked for a military officer named Capt. Robert Timmermeyer. During the summer, I accompanied them to work on many occasions, spending my days at the Fort's movie theater, large swimming pool, shopping at the PX, teasing and flirting with the young WOC's or roaming the sprawling grounds. We also visited the Baker Hotel frequently, swam and ate there and sometimes spent weekends at the grand hotel. My parents also attended several social functions there, including Christmas parties, for Fort Wolters personnel. I was in Mineral Wells back in 1997 and drove through Fort Wolters. I found it somewhat eerie, especially with the abandoned buildings, the barracks, airfields and the large, once impressive but now decaying houses of high-ranking officers. (I also sneaked into the Baker Hotel through a side door left ajar, but that's another story!) I was flooded with memories as I drove through FW, remembering all the fun times I'd had there as a pre-teen. I vividly remember the entrance with the two helicopters on either side and the immaculate manicured grounds of the entire camp. We ate lunch in a commissary and my parents, as high-ranking civilians, were allowed into the Officer's Club. Those are just a few of my recollections.
