Guess I can't edit these. I was sitting on the steps of my 5th WOC barracks, shown in IMG_1050.JPG on November 17th 1966 and watched one of the most spectacular meteor showers of all time, the Leonids. I thought my eyes had gone bad. At one point the fall rate approached 80 meteors per second! I was in Class 67-11. Flight school was a great experience. Will never forget it. I went on to fly Chinooks for 24 years.

I went to Travis Elementary in the first grade. My dad, Sid Sicotte, was the Director of the Mineral Wells USO Club from 1953-56. I enjoyed my time in Texas.

I was never stationed at Fort Wolters, but was stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, MO, Ft Dix, NJ, overseas, and later at Fort Campbell, KY during the mid 1960s and this is the way I remember the
WW II style barracks I lived in. The only different is that they were yellow then.

My family lived on the deactivated base for two year, from about the summer of 1947 until 1949. My father worked for a company named ABC and we had been relocated there from Chicago. I was only in the 1st and 2nd grade when we lived there. Our first residence was a barracks (upper floor) very similar to the one in this photo (IMG_1050). The 'powers that be' relocated us to an old mess hall at some point. I remember a family of skunks at our back door and a cow chasing me up the steps into the house. We were moved again to a third barracks, which I believe was also a mess hall, but I'm not sure. It's hard to recall much from that time.

I am now 67 and both my parents have passed on. I have really, really enjoyed looking at these pictures and recalling the fun time my brother and I had while living on the base. [There was not so fun times too, like having the red measles in the middle of the first summer we were there and then sometime the next spring having a very severe case of chicken pox.]

If there is anyone out there who lived on the deactivated base from sometime in 1947 to 1949 (about) I'd love to hear from you. We were bused to Travis Elementary School in Mineral Wells when I was in the 1st and 2nd grades.

Thanks for the memories.
