That "closing date" was this, no new primary helicopter school trainees were transferred in after that date, if lets say, you were a third or halfway through school you would finish your helo basics before being shipped off to Rucker for assault school, all future trainees were then diverted to other installations. But, yes that is a little confusing. Fort Wolters was very, very lucky it had been operating on borrowed time for quite a while they averted close down numerous times prior to '73, but U.S. Senator John Tower, (Wichita Falls) who of course was the eventual Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman was able to keep his foot stuck in the door until '73 when at that time there was simply no justification for keeping it open then with Vietnam winding down after the 1973 Case-Church Amendment-ending Direct U.S. military involvement..

Does anyone else take issue with a closing date of 1 Feb 1973? I was stationed at Wolters on that date and I don't remember it being closed. I thought the base closed in 1975.
