Summer of 1943

Dad w Piper Cub, France, Summer of 1943

I ran across this image while cleaning out our parents house late last year.

My dad flew Piper Cubs as a reconnaissance pilot in World War II.
I remember him telling us when we were very young,
that they would sometimes sleep under the wing of their planes at night when they were in France.
I remember thinking that it sounded very "romantic" in a worldly sense.
I asked him about that just a few years ago, and he didn't think that was quite the description he would have given!

Now that is a true aviator in fabric airplane, flying now higher than the ground and speed not faster than a car. He had gusts.

Wow! He REALLY kicks ass! Piper Cub doing reconnaisance is about as dangerous as it gets!! No weapons to defend yourself (I think) and a slow moving single engine airplane. I would vote him as one of the "real tough guys" in the world of aviation. Be proud! An amazing photo!
