Faculty Show

I have the genuine privilege of teaching a beginning photography class at Northern Oklahoma College located in Tonkawa, OK.
We have a fine art faculty show every two years and this show will begin on Wednesday, 27 Oct 10.

The images I will show are on display in this gallery. They are all part of my Photo A Day galleries from 2010 and 2009.

I never considered teaching as part of my life until I was asked in 2001 if I would be interested. It was an absolutely terrifying experience at first, but I am so thankful that I tried it.
It has been a truly humbling but at the same time very rewarding experience. I recommend everyone have the experience at least once in their life. You will be better for it.

Artist Statement - Ken Crowder

I have been working on a Photo a Day project since January 1st, 2009. The concept behind the project is fairly simple, while accomplishing it is not necessarily so. The idea is to take at least one photograph of artistic merit every single day for a year, and post the images to my website.

Now approaching the end of my second year with this project, and having posted well over 650 consecutive Photo a Day images, I have had time to step back and try to determine what this project has meant to me.

This I am sure of: I have become more aware of a certain feeling or sensation that I experience when I see something that I might want to photograph.

Sometimes the potential image is so obvious that it has a strong voice compelling me to stop and make a photograph, but more often than not it is a quieter voice. Sometimes it is just barely a whisper. I think one advantage to the daily discipline is that I am now able to see and hear softer and quieter whispers.

I feel that I am now seeing what I may not have noticed before.

In the past I often felt like it was necessary to pack up all of my camera equipment, get into the car and go on a “photo trip” in order to really be ready to make photographs. This could have been a 30 minute local trip or several days on the road to sites that are known to be “worthy of photographs”. I still enjoy the occasional trip where I am allowed the luxury of being inspired by new and obviously beautiful surroundings.

A Photo a Day project by its very name means that the photographer must constantly search for interesting images where they live. Several of my daily photographs have been made inside our house, or on our front porch or in our yard or across the street. The majority of the images I have used were found while wandering in and around Tonkawa. I almost always have a camera with me no matter where I am.

This type of project forces you to find art in the familiar and the mundane.

I hope that you enjoy seeing a few of the images I have taken as part of this endeavor.
