Where next ?

view map

This photo was taken at the Hauptbanhof in Zurich, Switzerland, from
the far end of platform 16/17. I noticed this mesmerising view a few days
earlier but the light was not great so I decided to give it another try on
the way back.

It is not often that a grey rainy day helps photography, but here I feel
it did, putting this wet sheen on the tracks and reducing contrast.
For comparison, check another image

NB, I got chased by the railway police on this shoot, as I was crossing the tracks
looking for the best angle. Very unpleasant sound those whistles make :)
Fortunately, the Swiss turned out to be forgiving and I walked away without a fine.

The location is now geotagged, click 'view map' above.

Awesome image. I was wondering if you got in trouble for that shot. Glad it was just a slap on the proverbial wrist. Someday I will take something nearly as cool at the Bailey yards in my native state. I believe it is the world's largest railroad classification yard. To put it in perspective it covers 2,850 acres and handles 10,000 cars every 24 hours.
Peter Sussex20-Sep-2009 20:20
Awesome labyrinth of rails and an excellent capture.
Jeroen Bosman20-Sep-2009 19:18
Amazing, in all senses of the word, v! BTW this not only makes one wonder where to go, but for the rail enthousiast also where it is. Could you inform us about that?
