A little corner of Sofala

Sofala came into existence as a direct result of gold discovered nearby in 1851. This little village of two streets of no formal construction nor curbing and guttering is considered to be Australia's oldest surviving gold town. Some of the buildings have been lovingly restored and maintained and provide an interesting insight to our early history.

Oh yes. Sofala is a gold mine for photographers. I had a print of Russell Drysdale's "Sofala" on my wall for many years. He'd won the Wynne prize for that work, the year I was born. Gold mine for painters too I suppose. This pic gives a good impression of the place. Whenever we go from Bathurst to Mudgee, we pass by here.
