The three watercolor and daub layers created the texture I was looking for.
But to increase the highlights upper left and lower right and in the distance, I combined (9) with a brighter layer (7),
and erased to expose these areas, increasing the dynamic range of the final picture.
It doesn't look quite like the original, but this does look more painterly, I feel!
