To regain some of the brightness and leafy details, I combined the watercolor layer with the original photo.
The upper lefthand corner was improved, as well as textures along the overhead tree branch and foreground highlighted areas.
However, the contrasty watercolor effect was reduced greatly, and the image seems soft.
