Sandflugtsmonumentet, Tisvilde (the Sand Drift Monument), sits on a small hill in Tibirke, Denmark.
To a child, it looks like a strange portal covered in runes, but the carvings are really Danish, Latin and German, written in letters that looked different back then.
It was erected in 1738 to celebrate winning the fight against drifting sand. From the 1500s to the 1700s, the sand buried farms and whole villages in the area I spent a lot of time in as child because my grandmother lived close.
