The colonial town of Oaxaca (pronounced Wa-haca), built in 1529 by the Spaniards, lies in a valley surrounded by the mountains of the Sierra Madre del Sur.
The city has become an important centre of trade and industry but has kept its provincial atmosphere
also thanks to the mixture of cultures (Zapotecs, Mixtecs,..) that are present in and around the city.
