It seems a majority of people were ticked off regarding this issue.
City corruption and power weilding seemed to be exposed. Many people were upset with this.
As for the former candidates name on the sign - big deal. You just said he engineered the sign.
The kids went through all the proper channels and were learning about city government. What they ended up getting was a first hand lesson in political corruption and political favortism of certain interest groups.
The Fiends of BP should of went through the proper process to voice their opposition to the sign and the mayor's office should not have acted so hastily to remove the sign.
Could it be that the Friends of the park are upset that the group was not recognized on the sign? I do not think they should yield such powers over the Park Board.
Let's see how long it will take before the FoBP have a monument placed in the park recognizing themselves...probably placed in the spot where that sign was originally erected.
The sign was removed by the city following objections raised by City Councilor Jane Gonsalves and members of the Friends of Buttonwood Park.
We were horrified by the location they chose for the sign because it blocks the view into the park, said Anne Eades, president of the Friends of Buttonwood Park.
The sign was promptly removed and is being stored at the city yard.
Buttonwood Park does not belong to the Friends, it belongs to the people of New Bedford, said board secretary Edward Correia at todays meeting. They have overstepped their bounds. Input is one thing, but they are trying to dictate what goes into the park.
But if youre going to put up a sign, you have to deal with the people who are the stewards of the park, the mayor said in reference to the Friends group.
Two members of the Friends had assisted him in putting up the sign.
Mr. Coelho said the Friends had never offered an opinion to the Park Board members.
Its in the minutes, he said. Richard Leary of the Friends group came to the Park Board meeting on April 23rd and told them they had some reservations but had not reached a decision.
We didnt say yea or nay. We left it up to the board, Ms. Eades said. We just told them we would like to see a sign policy adopted for Buttonwood.

too bad you didnt take the time to understand the issue before you made mean-spirited jokes about it! what about the fact that one of the 'volunteers' who engineered the sign project is a former candidate for office, and saw fit to put his name on the sign? doesnt anyone see a problem with that?
