Puerto Rico 2013

Back in June we took a day off for my birthday and had a long weekend in Puerto Rico, it was a pretty relaxing little trip, but I did make us go on at least one adventure day! We rented a car and drove out to Arecibo and then to a few caves which were awesome/terrifyingly-full-of-bats.
Cloudy weather in San Juan, view from our hotel. Welcome sign to Arecibo! Keep it calm, kids. Visitor Center and Tower 1, 285ft high. The whole 1000ft reflector dish, and towers 2 and 3.
Closer up shot of the whole setup. #nofilter Close up of the 900 ton platform suspended above. Tower 2, 285ft. The 96ft 430MHz antenna.
Tower 3, 385ft. Bird in front of the reflector. Edge of the reflector and service roads. Shadow of the suspended platform, almost looks like the Deathly Hallows... Close up of the Gregorian sub-reflector.
The whole Arecibo complex sticking out of the jungle. The entrance to Cueva Ventana. Getting way down into the slimey cave. Seemed like there should have been some safety equipment of some kind... Janina, ever ready with the headlamp! There were lots and lots of bats in there and it was pitch black, pretty terrifying really.
But the window view was pretty awesome still. The countryside looking out the cave. g9/78/587478/3/153189471.wHytk8fH.jpg Looking toward the window opening, heading back through the bat cave... Rocky shoreline at Cueva del Indio.
Heading down into the cave. Looking back toward the north shore. Petrogylphs, supposedly, at Cueva del Indio. The cave, means of entry, and petroglyphs. Cool tide pools and holes in the rock.
Bats! Bats! Bats! g9/78/587478/3/153189482.buSJtFKe.jpg g9/78/587478/3/153189483.NRu7pdc9.jpg
