thanks Nelson! Yes, it is heavy, and I do use it with a monopod often, but I can handhold it for a while when needed without problem. The IS is very effective, to me, it is as effective as 70-200 IS. Indeed a wonderful lens!

Those are great shots! How do you like the weight and size of the 300 f/2.8? Does the IS unit on the 300 f/2.8 provide 3 stops advantage like the one on the 70-200 IS?

the lighting here at stanford's maple pavilion is much better, so I get away with f2.8 lens. But it is usually better, and more popular, to use prime lens, like 85/1.8 and 135/2L for this. I was using 20d + 300/2.8 L IS. manually set at around 1/640 and f2.8, ISO 1600. IS was on and I use it with a monopod. Best.

Your gymnastics pictures are great jx. I just bought a 20 D last month, because my 8 year old daughter is in gymnastics and has just started competing. I want to get a lense to take those kind of shots. Not sure which type other than a 70-200 f 2.8 dont know if I need the IS or not. What lense and settings did you use to capture those girls? If you don't mind sharing the info, its much appreciated. Thank You JoAnna
