MPSF Championship 2004

My first time shooting a gymnastics event. I think I've learned a lot from it and hope I will do better next time.

300d + EF 135/f2 L @ f2 + EF 85/1.8 @1.8, iso 1600, mostly manual mode.

Richard, thanks very much for your comments. These photos was taken early this year, and at that time, I was not very confortable with RAW processing, and I was feel it was little slow to take raw pictures for this kind of event. so I only take a few RAWs and mostly just jpeg. I am looking to the new season, and like to try again - this time, I'll definately use more RAWs.

These are great indoor sport shots. I really like your compositions. I would however recommend that you try using RAW mode next time which will give you a lot more latitude in developing your shots on the PC.

Thanks for the comments.

I think if you can freely move around during the event, the 85/1.8 is probably better. When I shoot this event, I do found that 135/2 is little long. But the gym is relatively small, and also I usually need extra framing for gymnasts because they moved very fast.

For the event where you have to sit in a fixed seat, or your subject is relative static (move slowly), then 135/2 will be the better.

Quality-wise, I'd say they are very very close. For my copy, both 85/1.8 and 135/2 is very sharp even at wide-open. I do found my 85/1.8 have some CA sometimes, 135/2 is much better in this regard.

Another thing to consider is that 85/1.8 is faster than 135/2, not much, but faster is faster, and you need to consider that 135/2 need more speed to eliminate the camera shake.

Both are very fine lenses, I am sure you will enjoy either of them, or both!

I have a 300D and I trying to decide which lense(s) to get for indoor shooting. (I want to shoot rhythmic gymnastics and figure skating.)

I am wondering if the 135mm/2 is too long? What was your feeling?

(I am also considering the 85mm/1.8)
