Canopy Tower

Tena Area

This was a truly incredible experience. There is a park in the Tena area where for a couple dollars entry fee they will lend you a climbing harness and send you on your way to have the run of the extensive trail system and wildlife-watch until your heart's content. At the top of one of the trails there is this triangular tower with a small round viewing platform atop its height (something like 30 to 50 meters, well above the tree canopy). Two at a time, we climbed the tower and spent about an hour watching the many species of birds and butterflies that spend their time high in the canopy. We heard a number of birds up there that we just couldn't get a look at from the ground. But once we got up to the top of the tower, the high-perching cotingas and toucans, etc. were there to enjoy! It was a little rickety up there, and Mel got pretty scared for a while, but in the end we all made it to the top and got to see some great views looking out over the treetops in a forest with a canopy over a hundred feet up.
