Ornate Flycatcher

Mindo

This aptly-named flycatcher posed at a distance, but allowed a fairly close approach through some moderately thick forest edge undergrowth with the 300mm lens, 2x converter and some creative use of a nearby tree trunk for lens stability. I put the sneak on this one, shooting on the way in as I got closer. Most of those "on the way in" shots were a tad blurry from the slow shutter speeds we fought beneath the canopy on the whole trip. But eventually finding that nice solid trunk to press the lens against resulted in this shot.

Apparently you've got it right even without a tripod at that focal length. Great shot.

Aye, it truly lives up to its name.
Congrats on such a good image in difficult circumstances.

John, I may have asked you this before but are you using a tripod with this lens? If not, how do you get such incredible shots?
