One-spotted Prepona

Archaeprepona demophon

We found this prepona taking nutrients from fresh animal scat along the road toward Bocatoma 2. Tropical and subtropical butterfly fauna are well adapted to finding and making use of what little amount of nutrients are available to them in their native habitats. This includes visiting piles of fresh animal scat to drink the moist fecal matter for the nutrients they provide. It may seem like tough way to eek out a living, but in nature, animals must adapt to what resources they have or die. These beautiful butterflies are no exception to that rule, as you can see in this image. Here the individual is showing us just a hint of the beautiful blue coloring on the dorsal side of the wings.
