These beetles bury a ball of animal dung with a single egg inside. The egg then hatches and the larva eats the dung, eventually growing into another adult dung beetle off of the nutrients the ball of dung provides. This is nature's way of cleaning up the mess that animals leave behind. Thousands of dung beetles have been released in New York's Central Park to combat the animal waste problems of people who walk their pets without cleaning up after them. From what I hear, the dung beetle campaign has been a success.
