Japan's ancient trade routes; The Nakasendo 中山道

Pictures from the part of the old Nakasendo route between Magome-juku and Tsumago post towns. The Nakasendo was one of the two Edo-era roads linking Edo (Tokyo) and Kyoto, running through the mountains and passing through present-day Saitama, Gunma, Nagano, Gifu and Shiga prefectures. This section of the ancient highway has a number of well-preserved post-towns where travellers would break their journey.
