Sorry to dispute, but isint Ergot normally/commonly found in rye/wheat shafts that have started fermenting, producing little purple coloured mushrooms (usually microscopic, but can get maybe half a pinky size?) sorry, I have not seen this in person.
I think this mushroom is a common rainbow polypore, we have lots of them in North America, some in huge sizes.

Dear Judy, what you shot in here is the fongus that is in the origin of Eleusis Misteries, and its call Ergot (cornezuelo in spanish). Great shot indeed!
