The Politics of Naming
By LG Burroughs
My stepdad takes photographs
that should be paintings.
I need a layer of oils
between my eye and their naked
perfection. In particular the photos
of my mother's garden.
The delicate eggplant and eggshell
of the foxglove's bells,
the grains of pollen leaping
out onto the iris. They leave
her touch, his gaze too bare.
Since his parents died he is a planet
with nothing to orbit. I know
when he and she go I will spin
out into the galaxy, freeze
without my suns and shatter.
I've always fancied men who wear hats
and I'd like to call him as I love him:
Brahms Rhapsody in G Minor -
pity that stepdad will have to do.

These are the foxgloves I was referencing in your poem! Love this photo!
