I decided recently to try digiscoping. Initially, I tried prime focus imaging by attaching my Canon 30D directly to an Orion 127mm Maksutov Cassegrain telescope (no eyepiece on the scope, no lens on the camera-the scope acts as a 1540mm f/12.1 lens). Focusing is accomplished by adjusting the focusing knob on the scope while looking through the camera viewfinder. The scope is mounted on a solid equatorial mount tripod (better suited for astronomy than wildlife). I use the timer delay and mirror lockup functions on the 30D. Although the telephoto reach of this arrangement is extremely appealing (2464mm with 1.6x fov), these pictures haven't been particularly impressive. The image quality is poor and the images aren't particularly sharp, even with judicious editing. Plus, the donut-shaped bokeh (due to the secondary central mirror) is annoying at times. Granted, I've never used anything other than L glass for my SLR telephoto work, so perhaps I'm spoiled. Also, tracking and focusing are slow at best and the timer delay doesn't help things, either. That's why the majority of decent pictures taken with this setup are of squirrels (they don't move nearly as much as birds). I've had better success putting my 7mp Olympus C-7000 point & shoot up to the eyepiece and firing away (see moon and Jupiter images).
