This borrow pit, 60 feet deep in places, was created when dirt was dug to build the spillway east guide levee. It extends from Airline Drive almost to Lake Ponchartrain and will be part of Lake Ponchartrain within a few years, thanks to soil subsidence, soil slumping, and erosion caused by salt water intrusion.
