Years ago - I worked in the maritime industry here in San Francisco. Reflecting back - it always struck me as curious -
that while inbound vessels calling into the Coast Guard's vessel traffic service would announce their intended destination:
"...heading inbound to Chevron Long Wharf."
"...heading inbound for Pier 35."
"...heading inbound to Anchorage 9."
The departing ships would either announce another destination within the bay, or would simply say:
"Heading outbound for sea."
It seemed poetic. I had a list of where they were all heading - but the details dulled the adventurous notion of simply sailing into to the rise and fall of the open ocean -
"heading outbound for sea..."
