I do wonder what lens mount adapter has been used here. It stands to reason that unless the adapter is very good it is likely that the rear of the lens will be too far from the sensor. After all the adapter fits between the camera and the lens. I ask this because there are about 150 photos taken by using the A7r and Contax Zeiss G lenses on Flickr and although some are badly focused and uninspirational none of the show the obvious and horrible problems that are shown here.

Not a lens problem. Not a camera problem. The problem is the mismatch of technologies. Just as you cannot match a 1998 BMW transmission to a 2013 Toyota engine, so you cannot match any legacy lens to a digital sensor. Legacy lenses were made for film: film is not a digital sensor, and the two capture light by entirely different methods. The key issue is lens design. Zeiss has many designs: Biogon, Distagon, Tessar, Sonnar, Planar, and each is specific to its task (ie the camera and the film). Leica, too, but mostly of Sonnar design. Japanese do not disclose their designs, so are unknowns. For a digital sensor with legacy lens, the key to lens design is the distance of the rear element from the focal plane. The only legacy lenses that provide this are the Planar and Distagon designs, and the only brand that will optimise the A7R is the Zeiss. This webpage is extremely limited and does not present results from all the lens designs, and therefore the results are erroneous and the conclusions ignorant. The problems shown here are eliminated when Planar and Distagon lenses are used. Readers can search Flickr and other sites to see this is true. When the dedicated Zeiss lenses are used, the A7R gives unsurpassed images.

I did a test like that with the NEX 3. http://imprezzion-jl.tumblr.com/post/31252112920/leica-elmarit-m-vs-zeiss-sonnar-90mm-f-2-8 The Leica is slightly better but not by much. If you don't mind the awkward focusing of the Contax G (has to be via an adapter), it is a very good buy.

Joseph, since you have both the Leica 90 Elmarit and the Contax G 90, I was wondering if you could offer a comparison between the two on the A7R. I am looking at both lenses, and have read the Contax is the "poor man's" Leica Elmarit. I'm willing to handle the Contax focusing issues is I can get equal quality and save money versus the Leica. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks

Thanks. The CV 40 and 50 are fine. The Canon 35 is fine and no problem with the 50 and 135.
