View from the top of Tavira Tower
The Tavira Tower is part of the Palace of the Marquises of Recaño. This building, constructed in the first half of the 18th century, has a compositional scheme that corresponds to the typical typology of Baroque civil architecture in Cádiz. The building is located in one of the highest areas of the city, and its tower is among the tallest lookout towers in Cádiz, standing 45 meters above sea level in the city's historic center. Due to its height and position, it served as the official watchtower for the port of Cádiz in 1778, and its current name derives from the first watchman, Antonio Tavira. It is divided into two sections: the first with round windows with a mullion separated by a marble column and the second decorated with geometric paintings in almagra (red ochre).
