Cádiz. Monumento a la Constitución de 1812

The demolition of the port area walls at the beginning of the 20th century allowed for the creation of this enormous space, which consolidated its configuration in 1929, coinciding with the inauguration of the Monument commemorating the Constitution of 1812. The urban environment is composed of buildings that allow us to identify the evolution that the civil architecture of Cádiz underwent during the 18th century, from the baroque ensemble of the houses with four or five towers to the sober academic design of the Provincial Council Palace or the San Carlos neighborhood.
The members of the Cortes of Cádiz, aware of the importance of the document they had drafted, proposed building a monument to perpetuate its memory. It took more than a century to bring the idea to fruition, and the opportunity arose with the celebration of the first centenary of the Constitution. The chosen design was that of Modesto López Otero, with sculptures by Aniceto Marinas.
