Jerez de la Frontera. Iglesia de Santiago

The church of Santiago gives its name to the barrio where it stands, one of the flamenco barrios of the city. Its origins were an old shrine founded by Alfonso X the Wise outside the walls of the then medieval city.Construction of the current church commenced towards the end of the 15th century and was completed in the mid 16th century, under the supervision of the master builder Alfonso Rodríguez. It is a magnificent construction initiated in a gothic style that later gave way to the incorporation of renaissance and baroque elements. The Cristo del Prendimiento (Christ Captured) receives veneration here, popularly known as “Prendi”, a work attributed to Roldana. On the night of Holy Wednesday during Easter Week the parish procession is accompanied by fervour and song as the gypsies of the quarter welcome their Christ figure home.
