The Moorish fortress, the Alcázar de Jerez, is one of the most emblematic monuments in the city and the oldest conserved, dazzling us with its beauty. It was built by the Almohads between the 12th and 13th centuries, at the same time as the wall that fortified the city and shows us the enormous importance of Jerez during the long years of Muslim domination. The design of the walled enclosure is an irregular square shape and has four gates on each side, from which roads lead off to the major cities in the surrounding area. The perimeter of the walled enclosure is three kilometres in length and from its extreme southern side, in the highest part of the historic centre, it completely dominates the city and its surroundings.
Although the Alcázar had mainly defensive and military functions, it was also residential.
