Las Zambombas
The zambomba (A friction drum and a common accompaniment to Christmas carols, aguinaldos, and other folk songs), is the most authentic expression of Christmas in Jerez and forms the core of the conviviality and participation inherent in these festivities, as they are celebrated in Jerez. Local wines, traditional pastries, and flamenco-infused carols are the ingredients of the zambombas that are celebrated in every corner of the city during this time. The origins of this unique Christmas celebration lie in the gatherings held in the courtyards of neighborhood houses, where food, wine, and songs were shared, their lyrics and rhythms forming part of the popular culture. But in Jerez, the blending of these rhythms found its distinguishing feature in flamenco. Thus, today, the Jerez zambomba is a symbol of this region's identity.
