Strasbourg. Parc de l´Orangerie. Pavillon Josephine

The Josephine Pavilion was built in 1804 to house the 140 orange trees confiscated from Bouxwiller Castle during the French Revolution. The building takes its name from Empress Josephine de Beauharnais, wife of Napoleon Bonaparte. It is located a stone's throw from the European Institutions, in the heart of the Orangerie Park, a favorite walking spot for Strasbourg residents with its numerous fountains, statues, and plane trees adorning the park's paths. It also features a zoo dating back to 1895, a mini-farm, and a stork reintroduction center. The Pavillon Joséphine was listed as a historic monument in 1929, while the entire park was classified in 1993. Destroyed by fire in 1968, the Pavillon Joséphine was rebuilt identically and redeveloped for cultural use.
