Málaga. Iglesia de Santiago

The Church of Santiago was founded in 1490 and extended in 1545, taking over part of the adjoining mosque. It was refurbished in the 18th century. The original façade and the tower are preserved from the old Gothic-Mudejar church. This tower was first built separated from the church, following the tradition of minarets, and was joined to the church in the 16th century. The main altarpiece, which is Baroque (18th century), is made of polychrome wood and gold leaf from Archidona, and the central niche contains the image of the Apostle James. In the chapels of the Epistle nave, the Sacramental Brotherhood of Jesús de la Sentencia, the Virgin of Rosario and Christ of Medinaceli are worshipped. In the Gospel nave there are images of “Jesús el Rico”, the Virgin of Love and a painting of the Virgin of Las Ánimas.
The painter Pablo Ruiz Picasso was christened here in the 16th century baptismal font.
