The Rector De Somerplein , simply De Somerplein , is a square in the center of Leuven . The square was named after the first rector of the Dutch-speaking Catholic University of Leuven , professor Pieter De Somer . The square is dominated by the choir of St. Peter's Church .After Leuven station, De Somerplein with its busy bus stops is the main access route to Leuven by public transport. The square also features the Fonske , a statue that KU Leuven donated to the city on its 550th anniversary.Until 2011, De Somerplein was called 'Marschalk Fochplein', named after the French Marshal Ferdinand Foch . In the renovation plans discussed earlier, Louis Tobback also proposed renaming the square because he did not think it desirable for a square to be named after "a man who had millions of deaths on his conscience during the First World War ".
