Torre Valentina
The Turkish settlement in Algiers at the beginning of the 16th century posed a continuous threat to the Spanish Mediterranean coast from Turkish pirates, who landed on the coast, ravaging and plundering the coastal towns.King Carlos I devised a defensive system based on the construction of watchtowers along the entire Mediterranean coast. In this way, to defend the Mediterranean coast, between the 16th and 17th centuries numerous defense towers were built on the coast of Gerona, constituting a strategic fortified system of surveillance and defense in this part of the Catalan coast. Most of these towers communicated with each other visually or through smoke or fire signals.Today a good number of them are still preserved, many located on private properties, or attached to farmhouses.
The Valentina Tower was built in the 16th century to prevent attacks by Turkish pirates.
