The Pere Mata Institute is one of the most outstanding works of European Modernism. It is a psychiatric hospital that was designed by the architect Lluís Domčnech i Montaner at the end of the 19th century and is also an essential part of the city's Modernism Route due to its great cultural value. Commissioned by a group of people from Reus, the architect designed an innovative and advanced psychiatric center for the time, which followed the parameters of modernist architecture. Although the entire work that Domčnech i Montaner had projected was not completed, an imposing architectural ensemble of several pavilions was built that was a benchmark for sanitary typology construction. The most prominent and of greatest artistic value is the Pavilion of the Distinguished, where the inmates of wealthy families lived. Considered the jewel of the complex, it is listed as a Cultural Property of National Interest. Currently, this pavilion does not provide health services and is open to visitors
