The Lake
The Lake is the origin and the main identifying feature of the town of Banyoles.Jointly with its basin, it is considered one of the largest karstic complexes in the Iberian Peninsula. Formed in the quaternary period (250,000 years ago), it is unique for its geological, ecological, landscape and cultural value.The natural values of the Lake and its environs have been recognised with different protection designations. In 1992, it was included by the Government of Catalonia in the Plan for Areas of Natural Interest (PEIN); and in 2000 and 2003, it was included by the EU in the Natura 2000 Network and as a Site of Community Interest. It is also included in the Ramsar Convention, which classifies the lake environment as a Wetland of International Importance.
