Get out of the rut and into your hiking shoes – ride up to Schwarzsee with Zermatt Bergbahnen. Nothing could be easier and in no time you’ll be so close to the mythical Matterhorn you can feel its presence. Whatever the season, a trip to Schwarzsee will leave you wanting more.You’ll find this idyllic mountain lake – which at times really does have a black surface, as its name suggests – at the foot of the Matterhorn at 2,583 metres. From the Matterhorn glacier paradise valley station, you take the Matterhorn Express up to the Schwarzsee mountain station. The trip takes about 20 minutes, grandiose vistas included.Once you get to the top, it’s worth looking around and taking in the view. Across Schwarzsee, with its little chapel called “Maria zum See” (Maria of the Lake), up to the imposing north wall of the Matterhorn and the famous Hörnlihütte. Or a little further, down into the pretty mountain village of Zermatt – so romantic!
