The grand building in the heart of the old town market in its glory days functioned as the Crown Tribunal (1578 – 1794) - the highest nobles' court constituted by King Stephen Bathory. The Tribunal of Lublin was one of two, beside Piotrków Trybunalski, on the territory of old Korona. The nobility from all of Lesser Poland would come to Lublin to settle disputes. Corrupt judges and unfair judicial decisions caused the institution to be dissolved. One of the most infamous examples of corruption was the so-called Devil's Court, which supposedly took place in 1637. Around 150 years later, Dominik Merlini – court architect of King Stanisław August - rebuilt the edifice of the old Crown Tribunal, giving the building its present shape. Today, the building houses a Wedding Palace, while its cellar is the starting point of Lublin Underground Route.
