Between AD 329 and 346 the missionary St. Castor, who had been ordained as a priest by Bishop Maximin, founded the first Christian congregation in the Untermosel region in the Roman VICUS CARDENA. After Christianity has spread to the lower part of the Moselle, St. Castor and his companions built the first house of prayer - the Liebfrauenkirche (Church of Our Lady) - thus founding the original parish of Karden. The Church of Our Lady was located on today's cemetery, outside the Roman Karden. It developed into a large community of priests, which became the collegiate abbey of St. Castoris. In 1084 a collegiate chapter is mentioned in a document for the first time; in addition to the provost and the dean it accommodated up to 24 capitulars who provided pastoral care on the lower Moselle, the neighbouring Eifel region and the Hunsrück region.
