The first news we have of this little town dates of 1340, when Alfonso XI granted land to settlers who had been installed next to the chapel; this initial population group probably was not very important. Seven years later, another document, "Puebla del lugar de Santa María de Guadalupe", mentions the town, and a year later the king granted the prior of the Sanctuary the Lordship of Puebla, a condition under which it will be until 1820, at which time was formed the Constitutional Hall in Guadalupe.
