Vela Lavela Island Spider

Gasteracantha. I tracked this genus throughout the Solomon Islands and found the differences from island to island amongst the species to be profound in size, shape and color. This one was redder than the photo shows and quite large, as in an American dime. Species name unknown to me.

other sizes: small medium original auto

This spiders is most probable Gasteracantha regalis or a melanic variation of G. scintillans. Never the less, according to my knowledge such form was never described or pictured before. It is also possible that it a new species.
Best regards.
