Nuremberg (Nürnberg)

Nuremberg ("nourenberg" - rocky hill) officially commences on 16 July, 1050 when the freeing of a serf by the name of Sigena was documented in "Norenberc", a document issued by emperor Henry III.This date of the first written mention of Nuremberg is assumed to be the day of the foundation of the city. In 1424 Nuremberg was appointed the place where each newly elected German king had to hold his first diet, and where the crown jewels of the empire were kept. The Free Imperial City was at its zenith in the late 15th and early 16th century. This European metropolis developed to a center of German humanistic sciences, arts and sculpture. Although the town was almost entirely destroyed by bombs during the WWII, it has been remarkably restaured. In the heart of this city with half a million citizens, there still remain impressive churches, among which the Sankt Lozenz Kirche and the Liebfrauenkirche, the imperial castle, a five-kilometer wall encircling the old town and many timbered houses. Great Pics I was there with the 116th Ordnance Company from 1972-1974. loved the time we spent there. My wife came there with me and my daughter was born in the Army Hospital. THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES.

Stationed at 130th from 1974 till 1976 helped manage special diets part of food service. loved every moment I was there. The hospital is now gone but I still want to go back just to see if Tonys guesthouse is still there and all my photographs were lost in a fire so I have to retake what I can. anyone remember what street ran in front of the hospita7l. Very beautiful pictures, Jola. I worked as a civilian in the Laboratory as a med tech at the then called "20th Station Army Hospital" in Nuernberg from 1963 to 1964. I would like to find Ingrid Hauptmann (her maiden name) who also worked there (with Mr. Clifford) at that time. Maybe....someone knows? Thanks.

I was stationed at 130th General Hospital from October 1970 to January 1972 in the personnel office. the city was beautiful and so were the people. I knew Ron Slaughter and processed his marriage application for him. If you were in the military you had to receive permission from the army to marry.

I WAS STATIONED AT MERRILL EARLY 1960 TILL LATE 62 A- BTRY.39TH, FIELD ARTY, THE 280 MM, CANNONS. SHORTLY AFTER I LEFT THERE THEY DEACTIVATED THE GUN'S AND THE 39 TH, BECAME THE 17 ARTY. AN 8'' GUN OUTFIT. I HAVE SOME VERY NICE MEMORYS OF NURNBERG. I ONLY WISH I HAD SPENT MORE TIME VISITING MORE OF THE SIGHTS. AT THAT TIME I WAS ONLY INTERESTED IN THE BEER AND WOMEN. LOVED IT.

Really enjoyed the photos. They bring back many memories...I was stationed at Merrell from 1983-85 and Illesheim (about 45 mins.) west from 1977-80. Two of my sons were born in the USAH Nuernberg and the younger was baptized in the chapel there at the hospital. Does anyone have a photo of the hospital chapel? Thanks!

Stationed at Hospital in the OR 1980, then 47 th Med Bn. in Furth. I am still amazed, 30 years later how little it has changed except better. Specifically all those statues on the buildings and in the churches have all been re-gilded. and still, pane by pane, each section of stained glass windows. The hatred at the end of the war was so great that the old city of Nurnberg and a couple of weeks later all of beautiful downtown Munich were deliberately destroyed. No military reason at all. The only negative thing I ever heard about Americans was why destroy such historical places. Their military commanders in the last months of the war pulled out from Merrill for example in hopes of saving their heritage. The supreme irony was the military barracks we would move into weren't even hit until we came in on foot and of course, still in the 80's the bullet holes were clearly visible. What we weren't told is that we were fighting school kids holed up there. I hate visiting the Nazi stuff there because the history of the city is so much more interesting. They have a museum now about us! The occupation years. Boy do they miss the German American fest there. Must have had a half dozen Germans tell me that last year when I was there. They sincerely miss us, more than a couple were in tears running into an American soldier again. They are as anxious to tell stories of one or the other of us they knew as children and the candy the soldiers would give them. Probably no occupation Army in historyhas left with such good will from the defeated to become host country. For all vets who were lucky enough to be stationed here, please go back and visit. Won't believe the reception. Highly recommend little Hotel on Josephplatz in old town. Still decorated in old 30's German home decor. Suite I had was bigger than an apartment here and about 100 a night. Turn the corner and you are looking down the street to St. Lorenz. Beautiful. Great pictures. Still hard to find a good long shot of the castle on the hill that I remember seeing from everywhere, but hard to find the best spot to get a long shot. If anyone has one, please post. I'm always looking.

To all those who have been stationed in or visisted Nuernberg...YES---IT IS A BEAUTIFUL CITY!!!! I was stationed at 20th Station from Nov 65 until April 66 (OJT in the Pharmacy) and then again from Sept 1975 until Feb 1979 as NCOIC of the Pharmacy at 'USAH Nuernberg (130th Gen Hosp...after unit name change). I also had the pleasure of working with Herr Stahlmann and "OTTO". They were fantastic German Pharmacists and I learned a lot from them!!!! After my retirement from the US Army....I returned to Nuernberg in 1984 and lived there (in Stein) until March 1996. The ENTIRE Military Community was closed in the early 90's and now the nearest facility is Katterbach and Wuerzberg. Graf and Visleck are also stiill open (due to NATO status). All military housing in the entire area was converted to German Row Homes (with added balconies) and sold as private homes. Merrell Barracks was a housing complex for foreigners who left their countries to come to Germany seeking asylum. I hope this adds a bit of current info to those who haven't been there for many years. My wife comes from Nuernberg and my son still lives there. Have a great day! John

My husband was stationed at the 16th Field Hospital in 1955 to 1956. We lived off base in one room,shared kitchen and bath. We walked or rode the trolly ,so we saw a lot of the city ,a beautiful place.

I was a pharmacist at the 16th Field Hospital in Neurenberg from Jan 1951 till Feb, 1952.The other American pharmacists, Fred Bond and Walter Rosenberg. I worked with 4 Germans of witch 2 were pharmacist, Otto Kenerick, Henrich Stahlman and Brono Redman and Mr Schuh were drugist. I was at the 16th Filed Hospital from Jan. 1952 till Feb, 1953. with Cpl Walter Rosenberg and Cpl Fred Bond. The Germans pharmacists were Ludwick Stahlman, Brono Redman, Otto Kenerick and Henrich Shuh. We had our own cleaning woman Fraw Felix. I hope some will remember me. Jola: Thank you for the beautiful photos of Nurnberg..when I was there most of the town was still being rebuilt, but as I see,the German people have risen to the occasion...I was based at the 16th Field Hospital on Rothensbergger Strasse, which was torn down to make way for apartments and condo's...

Very Interesting gallery and " Love" all the history. It is sad it was destoried during the war. Sorry Germany got stuck with such a mad man as Hilter was. I few mad men in the world sure can screw things up.. I think at times we have our " Own" little mad man running our country these days.. Not sure what gives a big country power to control what another country does " Within" it's own borders.. Nice photos! V
